Coyote Hills Regional Park Field Trip

Garden members were treated to a special tour of Coyote Hills Regional Park with docent Dino on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

The Visitor Center contains educational displays and exhibits that portray the Ohlone way of life and include a tule reed boat constructed by park staff and volunteers using Native American methods.

Kids’ Event: Trash to Treasure

Ask kids what they see in the recycling bin and most of them will see a bin of potential. The Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Center will be unleashing this potential at the Lafayette Library with upcyclables generously donated from Republic Services on Saturday, April 16. Bring your children to the Arts & Sciences Room from 1:00PM to 2:00PM and watch them — and help if they want you to — bring new life to…well…”trash.”

Sunday: Fall Garden and Seed Saving Workshop

One of the many benefits of our climate is being able to garden year-round!! Fall/Winter is still a great time to grow edibles and improve your landscape.

Join us Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 3:00 to 4:30PM for Gardening All Year: Prepping Your Garden for Fall plus a special bonus: Beginners’ Lesson on Seed Saving.

Lori Caldwell, aka CompostGal, will go over techniques to help transitioning your garden for Fall: seed saving, crop rotation, soil amending, cool-weather edible crops, sheet mulching and planting natives.

Participants: To practice techniques of seed saving, please bring seed heads, pods, fruit, etc. to prepare and trade with others for a simple seed swap. In the interest of diversity, please bring only heirloom and/or open pollinated seed varieties.

The Lafayette Watershed, the Geography, Plants and Animals that Inhabit the Riparian Corridors

OuScreen Shot 2015-07-28 at 1.09.53 PMr very own founder has been invited to speak at Lafayette Historical Society’s Speaker Series that focuses on the importance of water resources in our community!

Janet Thomas has lived in Lafayette for 31 years, a couple of blocks from Reliez Creek. She developed an environmental science course for the Acalanes Unified High School District and used the creek which borders the school and its surroundings as an outdoor classroom.

She is now involved with the Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Center, which is adjacent to Lafayette Creek. Her community involvement today makes use of her research and teaching experience in the Acalanes High School District as well as Mills College and the University of California at Berkeley.Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 12.44.02 PM

SRO Outdoor Learning Season Opener

The 2015 Outdoor Learning Programming kicked off the year on Sunday with more than 50 members and visitors.  The opening program from our own Dudley Braun offered the basics in constructing raised beds from Redwood.  The follow on program from perennial favorite, Lori Caldwell, offered tips on getting your garden ready for planting.  If you would like to attend one of our Outdoor Learning Events, check out the “Events List” just to the right of this post and check back often for new listings.

New Little Free Library now open at Lafayette Community Garden

Little Free Library #18575 officially opened on Saturday, September 13 at the Lafayette Community Garden located at 3932 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

With the motto “Take a Book, Return a Book, the Little Free Library’s mission is to promote literacy and love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. Books of all kinds, appealing to all ages, are welcomed. The members of the garden have initially stocked the LFL with their favorites, but other patrons are encouraged to borrow and to bring books to add to the collection.

The Little Free Library is considered a gift to the community. The books are labeled or stamped “Always a gift, never for sale,” to reinforce the idea that these books should circulate freely within the community.

The Little Free Library is a movement started by Todd Bol and Rick Brooks in Wisconsin in 2010 and it has grown to include LFLs in most states and dozens of countries. More information can be found at the Little Free Library site.

The library is located beside the entry gate to the garden. It can be accessed from the street through the pedestrian gate to the left of the vehicular entryway.

Doc Jim Hale, wildlife biologist, naturalist and ethnobiologist will bring alive the amazing natural history of the Lamorinda area. Learn what plants thrived here and how they were used by local Native Americans. Find out what animals visit our area while we sleep at night. Doc Hale is an expert on wild, edible plants, the medicinal and cultural use of herbs, and mountain lion ecology in Contra Costa County. Doc’s photos and stories will delight people of all ages.
