Take a Natural and Cultural History Walk with Doc Hale This Sunday

On Sunday, April 6 from 9:30am to 2:00pm, celebrate Spring at this Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Center-sponsored fundraising walk.

James (Doc) M. Hale, pictured, is an expert on the natural and cultural history of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Explore Mount Diablo with new eyes on this natural and cultural history walk with local wildlife biologist and naturalist Doc Hale, as he interprets the fire ecology of the recent Clayton Burn, wildlife, geology, wildflowers, and the material culture of the Native Americans, their useful, edible, and medicinal plants. We will visit bedrock milling stations, as well as a village site and pictograph site.

Hiking level is easy. Bring lunch and liquids. We will carpool from the garden at 8:30am or meet at 9:30am at the John Muir Picnic Area just below the summit of Mount Diablo.

*A park entrance fee applies at both the north and south entrances, and is separate from the cost of the class.

Big Gardens in Small Spaces This Sunday

Do you want to plant a garden, but feel overwhelmed? Or perhaps you are a seasoned gardener who is looking for new ideas to optimize your growing space.

Join us at the Lafayette Community Garden this Sunday from 3:00 to 4:30pm  to learn more about creating big gardens in small spaces.

Lori Caldwell, certified Master Gardener and Master Composter, will discuss the possibilities that containers can offer us to make an impact in a small space.

Ms Caldwell will also discuss the topics of maintaining soil fertility, best plants for container gardens, watering and crop rotation.

It’s a great way to start a garden or add on to maximize your existing garden possibilities.

“Mow no Mo’!” or “How to remove your lawn”

Are you tired of mowing and edging your lawn, or for paying to have that done for you? Wouldn’t it be great to save money on your water bill? Wish you could quit with the herbicides? Would you like to have a beautiful, water-conserving garden that attracts wildlife? If so, “Mow no Mo!” is the workshop for you.

$30. Limit 30 participants.
Saturday, March 29, 10:00 – 3:00 Lafayette

In this hands-on workshop you’ll get information on how to remove your lawn, select native plants, and design a water-conserving, pesticide-free garden that attracts wildlife. Most importantly, you’ll have the hands-on experience of sheet-mulching a lawn, and you’ll depart confident that you can do this at home.

We’ll meet at a Lafayette garden that currently has a lawn, but won’t when we are through with it! If you have them, bring a labeled long-handled shovel and rake, and gardening gloves, as we will be sheet mulching—cutting back turf, shoveling compost, laying cardboard, and spreading woodchips. We’ll work here until everyone has had a chance to try everything.

Bring a lunch to enjoy while you get your sheet-mulching questions answered. We’ll talk about how to select native plants and where to purchase them, provide you with a list of sheet-mulching resources, and let you know how you can get rebates from your local water district for removing your lawn. You’ll leave this workshop ready to sheet-mulch your own lawn away! To register go here.

Learn About Rainwater Harvesting and Grey Water Installation

In an average year with 12 inches of rain, that small roof could collect 7,200 gallons of precious, FREE water. Or are you aware that you can set up your laundry to safely and efficiently water your landscape?

Sustainable Contra Costa is hosting hands-on rainwater harvesting and greywater installation workshops to help you learn how to conserve water, make your home more energy efficient, and save money. Spring Garden Classes!

It’s almost spring and we are starting a new season of classes at the garden to educate, inspire and entertain you while you learn more ways to celebrate nature!

Sunday March 30 – 3:00 to 4:30pm
Big Gardens In Small Spaces: Container Gardening

Please join us for the first class of 2014 with Lori Caldwell, certified Master Gardner Composter and a favorite teacher at the Community Garden. If you have small space or want to grow your own food without being overwhelmed by a big garden, this is the class for you. Topics such as types of containers, maintaining soil fertility, best plants for container gardens, watering and crop rotation will be covered. It’s a great way to start a garden or add on to maximize your existing garden possibilities. We have scheduled this class for March so you’ll be able to get your containers ready for spring planting.

We’ll meet rain or shine at the Lafayette Community Garden on Mt Diablo Boulevard across from the Lafayette Reservoir. A $5 donation per person to support our education programs is appreciated but not required. Register for our classes here.
