Ssshhh…Our Secret Garden II begins Monday, June 30

By Community Events, Gardening Tips, Kids, Outdoor Learning Center, Sustainability, Volunteer

Hey kids! The Lafayette Community Garden will be hosting its second Our Secret Garden series.

Beginning June 30, Eli Chan will offer children a chance to get personal about ecology. On Monday and Thursday mornings from 9am to 10am, kids (and their caregivers) will head outside and connect with nature through stories, physical activity and garden-related crafts. They will be armed with the tools to make good food and lifestyle choices. Caregivers will learn how to nurture our next generation to be enthusiastic about their bodies, the environment and our community.

Together, we will become caring human beings who are part of an interconnected natural world. Join us in the garden and get ready to dig deeper than before!

Janet Thomas wins Leadership Award

By Community Events, History, News & Events

Sustainable Contra Costa’s fourth annual Leadership in Sustainability Awards Gala was held on Wednesday, October 24 and Janet Thomas won the “Individual” award.

The evening’s biggest splash was the 2012 Leadership Awards. A 13-judge panel of local community members who understand or work in a field supporting sustainable practices selected winners in seven categories, and honored one individual for Lifetime Achievement. The awards were presented by Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich and Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez.

  • Janet Thomas, winner of the “Individual” Award, is a founding member of Sustainable Lafayette, and her vision of a community garden inspired $90,000 in support, volunteers in the hundred’s, and 50 households who now tend the food-sharing, education-spreading, Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Center.

Don’t miss Saturday’s Class!

By Community Events, Locavore, News & Events

Lafayette Community Garden and Outdoor Learning Center’s second class of the season is this Saturday.  You can sign up here.

Join Susanne Frey, landscape designer and gardener extraordinaire, as she teaches us how to recognize the insects in our gardens – those that promote health and those that wreak havoc.  We’ll discuss the benefits of both and how to minimize the negative impact of the so-called “bad guys”.  We’ll even learn a bit about insecticides.

If you have not been by the garden lately, check out the photos below.  It seems that our very first crop is coming in!
