Big Turnout

By Community Events, Gardening Tips, Outdoor Learning Center

More than 30 members and friends of the Garden turned out for the April 13 class on Irrigation and New Norms for California Landscape.  EBMUD’s Scott Sommerfeld did a great job and we did some hands on training while learning how to assemble drip systems.

Saturday, February 9 marked our first outdoor learning class of the year. Lori Caldwell, an educator on sustainable gardening from Martinez conducted a great class on building healthy soil. 30 people attended – not including the one in the stroller – and we all learned a lot. Don’t miss this one!

September 29   3 – 5pm   Winter Gardens
There is as much happening in your garden over winter as there is in summer…even if you don’t plant anything. Did you know tomato horn worm grubs could be hibernating in your soil? Or that you may be promoting the growth of various wilts by composting your tomato plants? Join Nanette Heffernan in a lively discussion on how to prepare your garden for winter to ensure you have a healthy spring. We will also be discussing winter edibles that do well in Contra Costa County: Swiss Chard, Broccoli, Collard Greens…the list goes on and on. You will even take home some seedlings to plant!

Coccinella septempunctata!

From out friends over at The Community Gardens website:

Many people are fond of ladybugs because of their colorful, spotted appearance. But farmers love them for their appetite. Most ladybugs voraciously consume plant-eating insects, such as aphids, and in doing so they help to protect crops. Ladybugs lay hundreds of eggs in the colonies of aphids and other plant-eating pests. When they hatch, the ladybug larvae immediately begin to feed. By the end of its three-to-six-week life, a ladybug may eat some 5,000 aphids.
